For Gold Coast electrical business owners
Run an electrical business that does not stop when you put the tools down
We rebuild the pricing, the quoting and the management layer so the business holds margin without you in every decision. Eight questions tell you where the constraint sits.
Generally suited to electrical contractors turning over $400k or more. AUD $2,500 per month. Application only.
Why listen
No. 13
AFR Fast 100, 2022, Zonda People

Companies founded, acquired or sold
Labour hire
Trades, construction, civil and mining
Recruitment
Blue and white collar, permanent
Byron has operated labour hire supplying trades, construction, civil and mining, and permanent recruitment across blue and white collar roles. He has not run an electrical contracting business. What transfers is pricing, margin by job type, quoting, scheduling, the management layer and the weekly numbers.
Sound familiar?
Where electrical businesses lose time, margin and control
Read them as they are today, not as you intend them to be.
Quoting happens after hours
Quotes get written at nine at night, so response time slips past the point where the job is already gone.
No follow-up on sent quotes
Most electrical businesses never chase a quote twice, and conversion suffers for it.
Margin leaks job by job
Old material rates, unbilled travel and free variations quietly erode gross margin.
Scheduling runs on the phone in your pocket
Half the job data lives in text messages, so nobody can see the week ahead without asking you.
Technician productivity is unmeasured
Billable hours per field day decides profitability, and most owners have never seen the number.
There is no supervisor layer
Every pricing call and unhappy customer routes back to the owner because nobody else holds the standard.

The system
The electrical business operating system
Six modules, installed in the order your business needs them.
01
Leads
Maintenance agreements and repeat commercial work counted separately from one-off residential jobs.
02
Sales and quoting
A quote turnaround standard, presented pricing options and a follow-up sequence that runs itself.
03
Margin
Labour rate, materials mark-up and variations, reviewed by job type each month.
04
Delivery and productivity
Billable hours per field day as the operating metric, with callbacks logged and given a cause.
05
People and management
Written scopes for leading hand, supervisor and admin, plus an apprentice progression plan.
06
Owner freedom
Decision rules written down and a weekly numbers meeting the team runs without you.
Instrument
Electrical business profit leak calculator
Two levers that cost nothing to pull: two points of gross margin, and five points of quote conversion. Enter your numbers.
Current gross profit
$456,000
Revenue x 38% gross margin.
+2 points gross margin
$24,000
Pricing and materials policy only, no extra work won.
+5 points quote conversion
$30,780
About 18.0 extra jobs a year, $81,000 revenue, at your current margin.
Both together
$54,780
The two figures added. Illustrative only.
Illustrative arithmetic based on the numbers you entered, not a forecast or guarantee. Each lever is counted once: the margin scenario is revenue multiplied by two per cent, and the conversion scenario is the extra jobs won at your average quote value, multiplied by your current gross margin.
Example only
The first 90 days
An illustration of the usual sequence, not a promise of outcomes. The real plan comes from your numbers.
Days 1 to 30
Instrument the business
Baseline the six operating numbers, rebuild the labour rate and materials policy, and set a quote turnaround standard with two-touch follow-up.
Days 31 to 60
Correct margin and delivery
Reprice job types below target margin, start the weekly numbers meeting, log callbacks with a cause and write scopes for field and admin roles.
Days 61 to 90
Build the layer above you
Name a leading hand or supervisor, hand over scheduling and first-line pricing inside written rules, and set quarterly priorities the team runs.
Sequence
What we fix first
01
The six numbers most owners cannot supply, starting with margin by job type.
02
Pricing before marketing, since more leads cannot fix work that already loses margin.
03
Quote turnaround and two follow-ups, the fastest available lift.
04
Job management discipline, so every job, hour and variation lands in the system.
05
One weekly meeting, thirty minutes, with the same six numbers in it.
The model
An operating partner, not a coach
Conventional coaching
- Asks questions, holds you to your own plan.
- One curriculum for every industry.
- Leaves the systems to you.
Operating partner
- Rebuilds the labour rate, quote process and scorecard with you.
- Led from eleven companies founded, acquired or sold.
- Leaves written scopes, decision rules and a weekly rhythm behind.
Fit
Who this is for
A good fit
- Gold Coast electrical contractors turning over roughly $400k or more.
- Residential, commercial, maintenance or solar, with field staff already employed.
- The owner is still the bottleneck for quoting, pricing and scheduling decisions.
- There is demand to serve. The constraint is structure, margin and management.
Not a fit
- Sole operators with no field staff and no intention of hiring.
- Owners looking for lead generation alone with no interest in pricing or delivery.
- Anyone wanting weekly encouragement rather than changes to how the business runs.
Questions
Common questions from electrical contractors
Do you work specifically with electricians?
We work with founder-led service businesses, and electrical contracting is one of them. The operating problems in an electrical business are specific enough that the work is built around them: labour rate build-up, materials mark-up, quote turnaround, billable hours per field day, callbacks, apprentice productivity and job management discipline. We do not publish electrician case studies because we only publish client results with written approval.
Do you only work with Gold Coast businesses?
No. Sessions run remotely with founders across Australia. This page exists because Gold Coast electrical contractors search for a business coach for electricians on the Gold Coast, and the operating realities here are real: heavy residential and multi-residential construction, a strong maintenance and strata market, seasonal demand and a competitive labour pool from Coomera through to Burleigh and Currumbin.
What size electrical business is suitable?
Generally $400k or more in annual revenue with field staff already employed. Below that the constraint is usually demand and pricing, which does not need an operating partner. Above roughly $2m the work moves into the full Bettr Operating System engagement.
How much time does it take?
Roughly three to four hours a month from the owner, plus a weekly numbers review the business needs regardless. The point is to reduce your hours, not add a standing commitment.
Do I need to stop working on the tools immediately?
No. Pulling the owner off the tools before the margin and quoting are corrected removes revenue and solves nothing. Tool time comes down as the pricing, the supervisor layer and the job management discipline take load off you, usually in stages.
How is this different from a business coach?
A conventional business coach asks questions and holds you accountable to your own plan. We work as an operating partner: the labour rate gets rebuilt, the quote follow-up sequence gets written, the scorecard gets built and the role scopes get drafted. Byron has founded, acquired or sold eleven companies and scaled one to number 13 on the AFR Fast 100, so the work is led from operating experience rather than a curriculum.
How quickly should I expect changes?
Operational changes such as quote turnaround, follow-up and job management discipline usually start inside the first month because they are process changes. Margin and utilisation move over a quarter as repriced work flows through. We do not guarantee financial outcomes, and anyone who does is guessing.
