Engineering services / Practical operating guide

Protect engineering capacity from invisible rework

A busy technical team may still lose margin through uncontrolled revisions and senior staff doing every review.

Owner-led operating work

Six implementation steps. Four defined measures. A checklist you can use in your next leadership review.

Management guidance, not a claim of sector credentials or client results. Set baselines from your own data.

Implementation sequence

Give each decision an owner.

  1. 01 / Practice principal

Define each commission’s deliverables, acceptance criteria, review gates and client change process. Separate technical authority from commercial approval.

  2. 02 / Project lead

Allocate budget hours by design stage and discipline, including checking and coordination. Schedule scarce reviewers before promising milestones.

  3. 03 / Discipline lead

Record first-pass work, approved changes and correction hours separately. Discuss recurrent interface failures without treating all revisions as avoidable waste.

  4. 04 / Resource manager

Map remaining hours by skill to available capacity after leave, training and business development. Resolve critical overload before selling more dates.

  5. 05 / Commercial manager

Review fee earned, recoverable work in progress and unapproved additional services. Agree who can authorize extra work and who must obtain client approval.

  6. 06 / Principal and project leads

Run a weekly exceptions review covering stage completion, forecast hours and unresolved review findings. Delegate routine scheduling while retaining qualified technical sign-off.

Immediate working checklist

Bring this to the next review.

From useful numbers to operating ownership
